General Ergonomics is a consulting firm specializing in ergonomic research, analysis and design solutions.  We also provide educational workshops on ergonomics.

General Ergonomics is owned and run by:

Dr. Valerie Rice, Ph.D., CPE, OTR/L, FAOTA, IMC 

Dr. Rice has a doctorate in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research with a specialization in Human Factors/Ergonomics, as well as a masters degree in both Health Care Administration and Occupational Therapy.  She is a Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE).  She is also a registered and licensed Occupational Therapist, and a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association. Dr. Rice (COL, R) completed 25 years of active duty in the U.S. Army.  

During her career, she has conducted research and provided practical applications within specialty areas of ergonomics, including physical/industrial ergonomics, healthcare, safety, education, special populations, children and macroergonomics.  She has published extensively, including areas such as medical human factors, cognitive ergonomics (learning, attention deficit disorder, stress), industrial ergonomics (injury prevention, safety, physically demanding tasks), user evaluation, and macroergonomics.

During her work with children, she has helped children and their parents address design issues in their homes, schools, and programs of learning.  She has also provided patient treatment to children with developmental, physical, and cognitive injuries and illnesses.

She is a past president of the Board of Certification for Professional Ergonomics, served on the Board of Directors for the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), and as Chair of the Medical Special Interest Section of HFES.  She currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer of HFES and President of the Federation for Professional Ergonomics.  She previously served on the American Occupational Therapy Association Accreditation (AOTA) Council and as Chair of the AOTA Work and Industry Workgroup.  She is on the editorial board of the journal entitled Work: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment and Rehabilitation.

She co-edited the text Advances in Understanding Human Performance: Neuroergonomics, Human Factors Design, and Special Populations

with Tadeusz Marek and Waldemar Karwowski; "Ergonomics for Children: Designing Places and Products for Toddlers to Teens" with Rani Lueder; and "Ergonomics in Health Care and Rehabilitation".  She has authored/co-authored over 100 publications and presentations on topics within ergonomics and health care.
